How Can I Stay Motivated and Achieve My Goals?

With the year drawing to a close, Christmas season is here and before you know it, we’ll be deep into 2021! This year has been quite exhausting in many ways, but what has kept you going?

Yes, there has been loss and difficulty, but there has also been a lot of time for self-reflection. We realised what we enjoy spending our time on. What truly makes us happy and what (or who) we needed to remove from our lives.

So with that being said, we could benefit from a final push to get us through these last weeks of 2020. And prepare us for the new year. A lot of people wait until January to start their resolutions, but why not start now?

I thought I would make a list of ways to help us stay motivated, no matter what situation we’re in right now:

Set yourself goals. What is it that you’re working towards? Is it reaching a target at work, wanting to climb up in your career? Maybe you want to complete an assignment for your studies. Set goals that can benefit you, whether short or long term. If you put your mind and effort into it, those goals can be met and exceeded! But also remember to be realistic. Are these goals attainable? Am I motivating myself towards success or a dead end?

Make a plan. To make it easier to understand your goals, break them down into steps. Plan your first step, and once you’ve completed that, allow it to motivate you onto the next step and so on. A lot of success journeys don’t happen overnight, so don’t be discouraged if you feel things aren’t progressing at the pace you want them to. They will, just have patience!

Reward yourself. What’s a better way to motivate yourself than rewards?! It could be anything like, you’ve reached your target weight loss goal, so decide to celebrate with a cheat day treat. Or it could be, you booking a holiday, (after the pandemic), because of all the hard work you put into your career. Either way, you deserve it! If you can’t celebrate your achievements then who will?

Don’t forget to take a break. I mentioned in my previous post, 5 Signs You Need to Take a Break… Like ASAP, that taking time out for yourself is vital in productivity and helping your mental health. It can reset our mindset and get us back into that self-driven spirit. Don’t let fatigue or exhaustion be a reason your motivation is lacking! Remember your wellbeing is a priority, especially around this time of the year when everything feels a bit more stressful.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We don’t have to do this alone! Sometimes we need encouragement or advice from others to keep us motivated and push us further. You could be thinking about stepping out of your comfort zone for example, and a friends supportive words could be enough to help you over that threshold. Don’t underestimate someone else’s opinion. Listen to what others have to say (only if you want to…)

Don’t be too hard on yourself! Yes achieving certain goals does take time. A lot of people just want the end results but forget to be present in the moment and thankful for how far they’ve come. If you haven’t reached a goal yet, it isn’t the end of the world! You will get there. Patience is your best friend and perseverance is your guide. When the time is right, what is meant for you will be yours.

I hope these can help you on your self-motivation journey. It can be a challenge, but we are all capable of achieving our goals. Let’s keep going! The right state of mind can turn reduce worry. Negatives turn into positives and good turns into great!

Thank you for all the support these past few weeks on my posts and blog! I know I have been a bit M.I.A. (this Masters degree has been messing up my free time but I’m getting there IJN!) As the pressures of my postgrad are ever increasing, I will do my best to continue to create well thought out content as often as I can on here, stay tuned…
